im not quite understanding this part on how to make a social links class like where do I put it and what do I write?

You simple have to set a class in the anchor element. Something like that:

 <a href="#" class="social-links">Follow me on Twitter!</a> => add class after the href or
 <a class="social-links" href="#">Send me an Email!</a>  => add class before the href

I think it is better after the href even it doesn't matter. Whatever you choose keep it consistent. You can define class the same ways in all ellements: div, section, nav etc.

Also in css when you select css selectors you use the exact same name with dot. 

.social-links {
color: white;
}
