In the cartesian coordinate system, left and right are the X axis and up and down are the Y axis.

It was just an oversight when the course was written. Besides, Cartesian isn't the only coordinate system in the world. So long as you know how to get from cell to cell, you can use whatever numbering/naming system you want.
