Increase integer variable?

Curious on the current method to increase a integer variable. In the exercise, the code is as follows within the while loop:

$i += 0;

Couldn't this code work as follows?

$i ++;

Curious, since on preferences of others.

I think it works the same. You just have to tidy up the format like so:

$i++;
