inline-block on ul or ul li

What's the main reason of setting the display: inline-block on ul li instead of just ul? As I observed it both did the same thing

Setting display inline block on ul will certainly apply that feature on the entire element. However getting more granular with ul li will make your code a lot more succinct when you have to do things such as set the spacing between the li elements and, when you want to use the list style type attribute.
