For some reason when I get about 16 lines into using IRB it stops listening and i have to close out Terminal.

It means the interpreter is waiting for some kind of ending of what you started. In your case, you started a string after puts and you did not close it because \" prints the " symbol but does not close the string itself.

The ide is definitely acting a little funny.
