I've converted an .ai chloropleth map(s) to an SVG but the code is dense, is this the right workflow?

I need to enter two data set arrays for a rollover and slider graphic in D3.js. I have designed two chloropleth comparison maps of a county in NC for 2000 and 2010. When I convert the .ai file from illustrator to an svg, the code is dense and difficult to organize. Is this the correct workflow for creating a DOM in D3.js? First time D3 user. Any better place to start?
