Laravel 5.2 flash data

I am trying to send flash data to the next page using sessions in Laravel 5.2 When I try and set the flash data and redirect the user, laravel throws a RuntimeException with the message 'Session store not set on request'.

Here's where the error occurs:

$request->session()->flash('message','Please enter your first name!');
return redirect('/signup');
