Learning Tips Question

Hi,

After reading through some of the discussions in the Community, I see that the main advice that is given when people ask what's the best way to learn the material is to work on personal projects where you can put these skills to use.

My question is, where do you guys work on these projects? Is it in the Workspaces environment? Being a complete newbie who has never programmed before and currently on the Web Design track, we have not yet learned about where a person can actually code other than in Workspaces. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Also, just for those who are interested, one of the things I do is I take notes on all the important things that are said in each video (pretty much everything!) as if I was in a regular classroom. It might be time consuming and not very efficient, but I have always felt that writing things down helps me learn, and more importantly, understand things.

Where you go to learn the concepts taught in the courses is entirely up to you.

I think Workspaces are a great tool if it works for you. Some courses on Treehouse are run solely on them but there's nothing to stop you from using your own text editor to develop your skills if this is what you want to do. Indeed it's my own preferred method of learning.

A text editor is like Workspaces but a standalone package for your mac or computer and depending on features they work the same way as each other. Sublime Text is a popuilar choice but I prefer to use notepad++.

The reality is there's no right or wrong way to learn. I too like to take extensive notes so I don't always sail through course videos. That's okay. In fact, even better if that is the case. If you can manage it, try to watch the video once over so you get a high level idea of what the video covers. Then watch again taking any notes you feel are important, and of course look at any post included in the teachers notes.

This is what works for me. :-)

Jonathan,

Thank you very much for your detailed response. I will definitely look into those two text editors and get myself working on practicing my skills. I actually do that too, I watch the video and follow along with the code in workspaces the first time, and then I rewatch and make notes. It really helps to drive in the point.

practice! im a new learner and what helps me is practice! and watch the videos more times than once because you might miss something important also pay attention to the details

Shakran,

I agree, watching the videos more than once is a must. I find that watching the video with the closed captions is a huge help in terms of making sure I don't miss anything important. They also help a lot when writing my notes. Good luck in your learning!
