You don't need it. In fact you shouldn't be using it at all. It's a redundant convention that doesn't have any real purpose. The convention in Java and Android is camel case, which is what you should be using. The only reason to use it is if you're working on legacy code and you want stick to the same naming.

It stands for member variable or member field, which is basically global variable. It's used to denote that you can access this in multiple areas that you like.
