main WP navigation that appears on top of the site has suddenly disappeared

I am working my way through the 'From Bootstrap to Wordpress' course and just after completing the 'Adding Ability for Dropdown navigation' bit, my main navigation has disappeared in both of my test sites. It happened just after I pasted the code from the project files into my style sheet to make the drop down only appear upon hover. After checking the code against the project files, I have copied and pasted the code from the project files into my header, footer, functions, index and style.css but still no joy. What on earth can be going on? If I cannot get into the admin area I cannot continue the course.
