A meta tag is a tag that gives the web browser "meta information" that describes something about the overall HTML document.

For example, the meta tag above should look like this:

<meta charset="utf-8">

It tells the browser to use the Unicode character set. If you want to learn more about what Unicode is, you can check out the Unicode website.

You don't need to understand the inner workings of Unicode to use it. Just know that specific meta tag should go in the head of every HTML page you create and you're fine.
