<module_name>.<method_name> vs self.<method_name>?

When I create a module purely as a way to store useful methods is there a difference between defining my methods as <module_name>.<method_name> vs self.<method_name>?

And what do we call these types of methods, I feel like they are similar to class methods but they aren't because they are in a module, so do we call them module methods?
