My portfolio won't link to index.html even thought I'm typing exactly what the program is telling me.

I don't understand why it won't accept my link to index.html I've looked it up and my code seems correct

index.html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
  <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <title>Nick Pettit</title>
  </head>
  <body>
    <header>
      <a href="index.html">
<nav>
  <ul>
    <li><a href="index.html">Portfolio</a></li>
    <li><a href="about.html">About</a></li>
    <li><a href="contact.html">Contact</a></li>
  </ul>
</nav>
        <h1>Nick Pettit</h1>
        <h2>Designer</h2>
      </a>
    </header>
    <section></section>
    <footer>
      <p>&copy; 2013 Nick Pettit.</p>
    </footer>
  </body>
</html>

Your code is correct but you have to start your navigation bar after the 'Nick Pettit and Designer H1 and H2 tags then the closing anchor for the first ref to index.html in the header. The nav in this case should be the last thing in the header, hope that helps.
