Not understanding this Python Code Challenge.

I'm not understanding the second part of this code challenge. Could anyone offer some assistance, please?

Challenge Task 2 of 5 That one wasn't too bad, right? Let's try something a bit more challenging. Create a new function named num_courses that will receive the same dictionary as its only argument. The function should return the total number of courses for all of the teachers.

My approach to this was not to use the .values() method.

Instead I set up a counter that incremented with the number of courses (found using the len() function) taught by each teacher.
