Why is i set to 8 instead of 0??

If you mean in the initialization clause of the "for" loop, that is a 0 (zero), but the font being used puts a little dot in the center to distinguish it from a capital "O" ("oh"). So if your screen is small and/or blurry, it could look like an 8 (eight).
