Objective-C: "sane state"?

What does he mean by the ball as "an instance of type Sphere in a sane state"?

in this forum post Amit states:

In this case it means that a valid object is returned. The method alloc allocates memory for the object but does not initialize it. The method init initializes it to a valid state and sometimes even with some default values.
