JavaScript JavaScript Loops, Arrays and Objects Tracking Multiple Items with Arrays Build a Quiz Challenge, Part 2 Solution

Ordered list items not appearing on the page

var questions = [
  ['How many states are in the United States?', 50],
  ['How many continents are there?', 7],
  ['How many legs does an insect have?', 6]
];
var correctAnswers = 0;
var question;
var answer;
var response;
var correct = [];
var wrong = [];

function print(message) {
  var outputDiv = document.getElementById('output');
  outputDiv.innerHTML = message;
}

function buildList( arr ) {
  var listHTML = '<ol>';
    for ( var i = 0; i < arr.length; i += 1) {
      listHTML += '<li>' + arr[i] + '</li>';
  }
  listHTML = '</ol>';
  return listHTML;
}

for (var i = 0; i < questions.length; i += 1) {
  question = questions[i][0];
  answer = questions[i][1];
  response = prompt(question);
  response = parseInt(response);
  if (response === answer) {
    correctAnswers += 1;
    correct.push(question);
  } else {
    wrong.push(question);
  }
}

html = 'You got ' + correctAnswers + ' question(s) right.';
html += '<h2> You got these questions correct:</h2>';
html += buildList(correct);
html += '<h2> You got these questions wrong:</h2>';
html += buildList(wrong);
print(html);

This is the code in my workspace for the challenge. The ordered list items will not appear on the page though. It shows the h2 elements, showing where the correct and wrong answers should go, but the actual questions aren't being displayed. Any ideas as to what may be wrong with my script?

Most likely the concatenation error in your buildList function.

function buildList( arr ) {
  var listHTML = '<ol>';
    for ( var i = 0; i < arr.length; i += 1) {
      listHTML += '<li>' + arr[i] + '</li>';
  }
  listHTML = '</ol>';
  return listHTML;
}

If you look, on the 5th line you are assigning listHTML to the closing ordered list tag instead of adding it to the end of the string with += operator. So this function is simply returning the closing tag.

Let me know if that helps.

Dean,

That was precisely the issue. Thank you so much. I'll make a note to pay closer attention when concatenating strings.
