Proper usage of ::after

Why in this case we do not include ::after in the selector, but in the previous question clearfix::after {} is selected?

style.css
/* Complete the challenge by writing CSS below */
.footer-nav{
  float: left;
}

.logo {
  float: right;
}

.footer-nav li {
  float: left;
}

.clearfix::after {
  content: "";
  display: table;
  clear: both;
}

The last step uses a different technique, where the clearing is being done at the beginning of the element. The "::after" psuedo-element is only used to make the clearing happen at the end of an element.
