but why can't I write this?

23,559 PointsThere's nothing wrong with the code you presented in the second option. It runs just fine in my local and online interpreter :)
adding a print(my_list)
to test you wind up getting [1, 2, 3, 'tree1', [4, 'tree5']]
as your returned result.
