Question about toUpperCase

Why does this work? var id = "23188xtr"; var lastName = "Smith"; var upID = id.toUpperCase(); var upLast = lastName.toUpperCase(); var combo = upID + '#' + upLast; var userName = combo;

But this does not? var id = "23188xtr"; var lastName = "Smith"; var combo = id + '#' + lastName; var upper = combo.toUpperCase(); var userName = upper;

Hi Brian,

It's not a question of whether it works or not, but whether it passes the challenge marking criteria.

Both code blocks should give the same response, but the challenge 'evaluater' is looking for lastName.toUpperCase() to be called. If you look at the error.

Error

Bummer! Did you call the toUpperCase() on lastName?

If you wanted to do the second option, as stupid as it sounds, it will pass by adding toUpperCase to the end of lastName :

var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith";
var combo = id + '#' + lastName.toUpperCase();
var upper = combo.toUpperCase();
var userName = upper;

Ah yes, this makes sense now. Thank you kindly!
