Returns 1

Hi,

I'm trying to make a login but my query keeps returning 1 even if the username or password is wrong - any idea why?

function select_single_user($username, $password) {
    require(__DIR__ . '/connection.php');

    $sql = "SELECT COUNT(id) FROM users WHERE usrname = ? AND psword = ?";

    try {
        $query = $pdo->prepare($sql);
        $query->bindParam(1, $username, PDO::PARAM_STR);
        $query->bindParam(2, $password, PDO::PARAM_STR);
        $query->execute();
    } catch (PDOException $e) {
        echo "Error: " . $e->getMessage() . "<br />";
        return false;
    }

    return $query->rowCount();
}
