reverse evens attempt (slicing)

ive seen others answer by slicing by 2s [::2] then reverse slicing [::-1]... but im curious why this isnt working! its worked in my REPL

slices.py 
def first_4(item):
    return item[:4]

def first_and_last_4(item):
    return item[:4] + item[-4:]

def odds(item):
    return item[1::2]

def reverse_evens(item):
    # length is even [0,1,2,3] -> [2,0]
    if len(item) % 2 == 0:
        return item[-2::-2]
    # length is odd [0,1,2] -> [2,0]
    else:
        return item[::-2]
