Jason taught us that we can add to an array using this syntax:
example_array += ["ice cream", "milk"]
but how can I do the same using this syntax:
example_array += %w(ice cream milk)
The question is how to do I display "ice cream" as a single value in an array?

You have to escape it using the backslash before the space, like this:
example_array += %w(ice\ cream milk)
