setting up mySQL and workbench?

I been following the PHP track and I've got to the database part. I have already downloaded Xamp so I already have mySQL on my computer. What is the process for me downloading and integrating workbench with my current Xamp setup?

Secondly what is Workbench and why do I need to use it? Just interested about it and what it allows me to do? Just so I can understand the big picture more.

As per usual with this PHP track I'm finding things are not explained at all which is making the process of learning very very hard. I'm finding myself confused in situations I don't think I should but nothing is explained it's just download this install that.
