Should I master HTML and CSS before learning WordPress?

I've been learning HTML and CSS on Treehouse and Udemy and been wanting to learn WordPress for some time now. I've been hearing how successful people are when becoming a freelance WP developer. I've always wanted to start my own freelance business and figure I can learn learn the front-end languages and learn WP at the same time. Any thoughts???

Are you going to develop themes for Wordpress, or just use it to create websites?

When creating websites with Wordpress, it generally isolates you from HTML and CSS and handles those things for you.

But it would certainly be good to have a functional knowledge of these things (not necessarily mastery) if you'll be developing themes or doing advanced customizations.

Thank you so much for your response. I would love to take a theme and customize the given theme with additional HTML and CSS if needed and plugins and administer the site. Makes sense I guess. What are your thoughts on what I wrote?

Yes

Hi Joseph,

I don't know about "mastering" the languages first but having a basic understanding of both before you dive into wordpress may be beneficial. It also depends on how you learn. If you think you can focus on learning html, css, and wp all at the same time then go for it. If not, start with html and css and ease your way into wordpress. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your input, I believe I can do them all at the same time. I'm wondering how people are monetizing as WP devs...

I haven't taken the dive into WP yet so I'm not sure about the ins and out of it but I know there are plenty of jobs for WP devs. When it comes to creating/extensively customizing themes and dealing with plug-ins for WP you need a developer.
