It looks like you're thinking along the right lines - you really just need to combine the two lines you have there. To split the "available" list by the semicolons and save them in "sundaes", it looks like this:
available = "banana split;hot fudge;cherry;malted;black and white"
sundaes=available.split(';')
"available" has the list in it already, so you can use the variable name there.
