Just in case anyone wants to try and use the state_machine gem for this model - it does not currently work on Rails 4.2. the original author has not maintained it and though there are forks...I still haven't found a working fork for 4.2

36,441 PointsI tried a few angles and eventually switched to the gem called aasm. It's very similar in configuration,works well with 4.2 and is still maintained.
