Stormy: Gradient background is showing up as white

I created the gradient as mentioned in the background.xml. However it is showing up as a white background. I am not sure what the issue is as I checked it with the teacher's background.xml file. I uploaded the files to my github. Below are the links for the gradient.xml file as well as the activity_main layout xml file.
