There should be a blank line before a method.

still getting errors after adding the blank line before a method.

        self.characteristics = characteristics
        self.roots = True
        self.leaves = 0

The first method does not need a line before it. Between the first and second method a blank line is needed:

        self.leaves = 0 
    def grow_leaves(self):
