To learn JS or PHP as a Wordpress developer

As I'm progressing steadily in my journey as a web/Wordpress developer, I'm finding myself torn between focusing on learning Javascript or PHP. I've been a Wordpress developer for about 2 years and am fairly comfortable with debugging, customizing templates and understanding the Wordpress API. For the past 3-5 months, my focus have shifted to learning Javascript "deeply" as famously instructed by founder Matt Mullenweg.

However, it seems that the core of the projects I'm dealing with is more of PHP rather than JS. I guess this is normal given that WP is powered by the former; hence this makes me wonder if I should strengthen my PHP chops or continue focusing on JS.

Would really appreciate if anyone can let me know their thoughts on this.
