Unclear on what this line is doing $output[$id] = $sort;

$output[$id] = $sort; This line sets a key with the value of $id (whatever that is) on the $array to the value of $sort. For instance, if i run:

$output = [];
$id = "an index";
$sort = "being used as a value";
$output[$id] = $sort;
var_dump($output);

The output is:

array(1) {
  ["an index"]=>
  string(21) "being used as a value"
}
