Use not working

I'm doing this locally so maybe that has something to do with it. I don't know, but when I use "use" it seems to break the script:

    /* ==== COMPOSER===== */
    require('vendor/autoload.php');
    //date_default_timezone_set('America/New_York');

    /* ===== MONOLOG ===== */

    use Monolog\Logger;
    //use Monolog\Handler/StreamHandler;

    $log = new Logger('name');
    $log->pushHandler(new Monolog\Handler\StreamHandler('app.log', Logger::WARNING));
    $log->addWarning('This is a new warning');

I fixed it by using 

require __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';

instead of just require
