Vector mask greyed out.

I'm using a newer version of photoshop than the one being used to taught this lesson and something has changed enough that I can't figure out what to do. When I use the ellipse tool, it automatically creates its own layer. When this layer is active the vector mask option in the layers tab is greyed out. When I select the the layer that the image is on and then try to create a vector mask, the 'current path' option is greyed out, presumably because the path is only on the ellipse layer.

I initially had the same problem. When you draw the shape (e.g. circle) - see the shape options panel which appears in the top bar below file, edit etc...in photoshop CC. Change the second drop down menu from "shape" to "Path". This will then allow you to vector mask your current path.
