what difference does it make when using 50px , 50em and 50%?

when can one apply % , px and em? i'm totally blown away and what is a parent ?

50px is 50 pixels. 50em is 50 times the documents base font size. 50% is 50% of the elements parent container when dealing with width and height. For font-size 50% will be 50% of the initial size.
