It means the comments in the provided workspace file

As for your code there are a few errors:

import random

def random_item(iterable):  # <-- missing colon (:)
  index = random.randint(0, len(iterable) - 1)  # <-- randint result used as index
  return iterable[index]  # <-- return indexed item, not whole iterable
