When I copy the sample program from the download files it is unable to build as it cannot find the plist file

This occur before I do anything

I think the problem is you are using Xcode 6 and the project is designed in Xcode 5. They have not updated projects in downloads section as i see. But the project template is updated to Xcode 6 - so you can download it and i hope it will work for you.
