When I run bundle exec cap staging deploy i get "Stage not set, please call something such as `cap production deploy`,

I can not for the life of me successfully troubleshoot this error message. Is there anyone out there that can help? I'm at a complete dead end.

What was ran bundle exec cap <determined stage> deploy

Full error message "Stage not set, please call something such as cap production deploy, where production is a stage you have defined."

I've tried running cd .. && cap staging deploy && cd - bundle exec cap <determined stage> deploy -T to see what was attempted

Have you added all the 'stages' to your project yet, i.e. config/deploy/<determined stage>.rb as suggested here: https://gist.github.com/bruno-/9808201#deploying-the-same-app-to-a-different-environment ?

Also, are you sure you are running the command from the project's root directory?

yes. I have. I've tried every single obvious thing that i could find. no dice.
