JavaScript JavaScript Basics (Retired) Creating Reusable Code with Functions Passing an Argument to a Function

Why can't I use a variable as a return instead of the parameter for this objective?

I had tried using the parameter and then variable as a return value and it was incorrect.

var echo = 'drink ' + drink; return drink; or... var echo = 'drink ' + drink; return echo; or... var echo = alert('drink ' + drink); return echo; or.. var echo = alert('drink ' + drink); return drink;

script.js
function returnValue(drink){
  var echo = alert('drink ' + drink);
  return drink;
}
returnValue('water');

it wants:

function returnValue(drink){
  return drink;
}
var echo = returnValue('water');

Call to 'alert(...)' is not required. Just return the parameter passed and assign it to 'echo' variable. Here's a solution:

function returnValue(param) {
  return param;
}

var echo = returnValue('Hello');

Oh my... I kept thinking the variable post to be inside the function. Thanks!
