There is nothing explicitly preventing you from using upper case in your variable names. However, you will find that in the Python community it is far more common to use names with underscores such as new_variable instead of newVariable. From a programming standpoint, however, it doesn't matter.
Your development team may not appreciate it very much, however, to not use a standard naming convention.
