why cnt i get past this stage??

You should not place script src="apps.js" /script. This is how it failing down. Your code is valid, but it's one and only reason why. You can probably check the whitespace between "alert ()". It's wrong function emplementation. No whitespaces between function name and expression brackets.

Also, you have an extra pair of script tags that shouldn't be there, Tinashe. They are the ones that have a src of "apps.js". Remove those from the document.
