Why does a popup appear in my browser when I enforce the alert function in a coding challenge?

I wonder how the code entered in a code challenge is linked to the page on which it appears.

Alert is a method in JavaScript that displays an alert dialog with any content that was specified as optional input and an OK button. When you call the alert method a dialog box will appear in your browser window and all other functionality within the window will be disabled until you click the OK button.
