Why no quotes around strings in HTML?

I'm a language browser here on Treehouse, and I'm coming back to HTML...and now I'm wondering why, when many other languages use single or double quotes around strings, does HTML not use this convention?

Short answer is like Kevin said, HTML is not a programming language. Technically, the file would actually be called an HTML Document... much like a MSWord document (or any word processing file). In fact, if you wanted to, you could actually write an HTML file in any Text Editor or Word Processor.

Because html isn't a language with arrays, objects, methods, numbers, and strings. It's just a markup language, so there is really no need for that level of complexity.
