Why $output[$id] = $sort and not $output = $sort

Why do we have to use

$output[$id] = $sort

and not

$output = $sort

when both

$output[$id]

and

$output

Are they both arrays? I'm not sure what your variables are set to, but whether they are both arrays or not, the second item below accesses an element of the array, not the whole array:

This is the whole array

$output

This is an element '$id' of the array

$output[$id]
