Courses Plus Student 17,967 PointsWhen you are using OOP variables can have multiple values at the same time, one for each instance of the object. $this->variable is how the code knows that you are using the variable value for this instance of the object.
My answer is probably not technically correct, but it is how I understand it and remember when to use $this->.
