Why wouldn't my code work

I have the correct answer, but wondering why wouldnt this code work

teachers.py
# The dictionary will look something like:
# {'Andrew Chalkley': ['jQuery Basics', 'Node.js Basics'],
#  'Kenneth Love': ['Python Basics', 'Python Collections']}

# Each key will be a Teacher and the value will be a list of courses.

def num_teachers(teachers):
    total = []
    for item in teachers.keys():
        total.append(len(item))
    return sum(total)

The first challenge task only wants the function to return "how many teachers".

But this code is counting up the total number of characters in the teacher's names instead.
