20,600 Pointsword_count challenge - didn't get the expected output. WHY?
I have completed the word_count challenge with the following function:
def word_count(string_var): lower_string = string_var.lower() word_list = lower_string.split(" ") word_dict = {} for word in word_list: word_count = word_list.count(word) word_dict[word] = word_count
return word_dict
I took care to convert the string to lowercase and am getting the expected and required result. Why am I getting an error? I suspect I am expected to provide certain specific steps which are not present in my function, but if this is the case, why is this not outlined more clearly in the challenge description?
Thank you.
# E.g. word_count("I do not like it Sam I Am") gets back a dictionary like:
# {'i': 2, 'do': 1, 'it': 1, 'sam': 1, 'like': 1, 'not': 1, 'am': 1}
# Lowercase the string to make it easier.
def word_count(string_var):
lower_string = string_var.lower()
word_list = lower_string.split(" ")
word_dict = {}
for word in word_list:
word_count = word_list.count(word)
word_dict[word] = word_count
return word_dict

Front End Web Development Techdegree Graduate 33,271 Pointsthe error says split on all whitespace, but you are splitting on the space character only. use split() instead of split(' ').
