Wordpress Download

I downloaded WordPress to use on my PC. It just sat there. No exe, no set up, no run. Googled info. Answer - download WAMP to operate WordPress. WAMP possessed my computer. Three downloads later, with an app that won't die... I am still dead in the water regarding being able to do anything with WordPress and I can't get rid of WAMP. Someone, somewhere lied when they said the download was easy. Solutions anyone? I just wanted to practice on WordPress before uploading my website. Thank you.

Wordpress is not software, so there is no exe, auto-run, or anything like that. It's just a collection of web files that make a CMS.

It's not hard to set up once you know what you're doing, but I do remember the first time I did it I was very frustrated.

Start with these courses that show you how to set it up, and if you still have questions, ask away.

When downoladed, there should be a folder called wordpress i believe. If you on imac, after downolad, search it on the search tool for WordPress maybe. It should be a folder where you have all the code etc.. as well as your themes that you can see and add manualy etc.. code.

Hope this helps too : p

Downolad WP. YOu should have a file. When you get the file, assign it so your localhost in prefferences. Then go to localhost:888 or whatever .. and there should be ur WP setting with a mySqli database as well.

Tried that?

Where are Preferences are located? I cannot find anything like that on my computer, in the file, or at my localhost. Thank you,

First lets set Xampp to run with admin rights, so go to your Xampp installation, probably in C:\xampp and go down to a file called xampp-control.exe, which should have a file type of application. Right click, and than click on properties, than the compatiblity tab at the top, and go down to a checkbox that says "Run this program as an administrator", and check that, hit Apply and than OK. Now when you open Xampp it'll prompt to open with admin rights, just hit okay.

Second, it's well know that Xampp and Skype try to use the same port, which is port 80. I think it's less hassle to change the Skype port, so in Skype go to Options > Advanced > Connections and untick a box that says us port 80 and 443 as alternatives for incoming connections. Now when you restart both software, it should work.

If not post up the next set of errors.

Kevin,

Your instructions worked and I made it through the steps in the "Installing a Local Web Server on a PC" video. My results as I followed the steps in the video did not mirror the video, but the steps led me to the end result. Thank you for the analysis and step by step instructions.

I'm happy to hear that helped. Been through both of those myself. :) Happy coding!

Hi Janet,

If you want to install WordPress on your computer, please watch our course on local WP development. It walks through the process of setting up what you're trying to do.

I did. I got as far as 1:15 in the "Installing a local web server on a pc" video. When I clicked on the Start buttons for Apache and MySQL, I received a slew of error messages. I've uninstalled, reinstalled. I've shut down and rebooted. I'm dead in the water at 1:15.

What are the errors Janet? We're all here to help. You can just copy and paste your error log messages here if you'd like.
