WordPress rookie question

I'm trying to get WordPress down and attempting to make my own themes, however, I'm not doing too well at it. I know it'll be a while until I could produce something "premium."

Is it better to continue on trying to make my own theme or use other themes and modify them until you get the idea? (Of course, it's up to the theme author if they allow it). Also, any other frameworks one can recommend?

If you download WordPress and open the folder in your text editor you should be able to see some themes already there. By looking at these themes you can see how WordPress uses PHP to create the website. The best way to learn is by doing it yourself because you will find a lot of themes require plugins, what you want to be learning is what goes on behind that plugin to make it work. You can do as you said and use themes but the best practise is to do it yourself.
