WordPress Setup Help Needed

Hi there!

I'm not going to sugarcoat anything: I've learned some beginning WordPress before, but it was very rushed so I'm basically a blank slate when it comes to setting it up.

Thing is, I do know a few things about website design, like HTML/CSS, and so my neighbor asked me to help redesign her existing e-commerce site. We've both agreed using WP would be best for her because she doesn't want to deal with code.

So I'm hoping one of you awesome people can help me out. I feel like I have a specific case here (though I'm probably wrong. I tried browsing through some Treehouse WP courses but I'm feeling a little lost because I'm on a deadline), and I have quite a few questions about set-up.

  1. My first instinct is that I want to use 1-click WP install. My neighbor has a GoDaddy domain and hosting, I believe, and I read that it has that option. I assume this is the easiest way to go, since I would be able to set it up on the web from my own computer, and then she can easily access it on hers (and nothing would be local on either computer)?

  2. My main concern is: if I do the above install, will her existing site be transferred over as is, or will everything be lost?

  3. If her current design does transfer over with the install, will it be easy to edit her design and integrate a new theme without losing her content?

Sorry about all the silly questions. I just feel like all the previous times I've learned about setting up sites were too rushed and overcomplicated.

Thanks in advance!

Without being able to look into your account myself, I could not answer your questions with the best of my ability.

I will say that if her existing website is not a WordPress website, then no, her current design will not transfer over. I would also make sure that when you do the 1-click install, that it does not delete any of the existing files of her website.

My advice is this...

Make a full backup of all the files from her current website. That includes backing up the database if there is one. Then I would call GoDaddy Customer Service at this phone number: (480) 505-8877. They will be able to help you and answer all of your questions. They will even walk you through doing everything you need to do to make sure you do not make any irreversible changes. Make sure you have the account number and call-in pin when you call.

I believe GoDaddy Customer Support will be the best solution for answering your questions. I hope this helps and guides you in the right direction!

Thank you! It definitely guided me in the right direction, though a different one than above. We realized we could actually just set up the site on a new domain so we don't lose the old one, which works out since she apparently wants a new domain anyway.
