WordPress Track Outdated???

Hi Guys how are you all. First off I have to say I have grown to love Treehouse these past few days, but one thing I would like to know: I have been reading from an online wordpress group I joined that the WordPress Track is outdated. Can anyone confirm this please, because I invested in Treehouse for the sole purpose of learning WordPress and Front End Development.

Will the older WordPress courses still be available to review? I noticed that on the older version of Installing Word Press Locally that it is set to retire on November 30th, 2017. (Sometimes, I need to hear things in a couple of different ways to get it...)

Would it be possible to have a record of what the two WordPress tracks were, so if we are wanting to work through them, that we won't miss out on this material?

Thanks!

Hi Faoud Mohammed ... you're right, and sorry about the confusion! Alena Holligan has been working on updating the out-of-date material for us, and we're ready to launch two new tracks that will give you a better, more current learning path for WordPress.

The first new track will be called "Beginning WordPress", and you can start on the material right away:

We're also going to clean up the WordPress Development track. Some of that maintenance remains to be done, but the bulk of it is ready. Look for that track to be updated soon, too. The track name will be changing to "Developing for WordPress".

Hello Mr. Ben Jakuben thank you for the response. I have a some questions.

I installed ServerPress from Zac Gordon course and have already completed "How to Install WordPress on Your Computer", and "What Is WordPress?" which has worked fine with me.

But when I started the WordPress track the first course "Local Wordpress Development" has installing WordPress on a PC via the site "apachefriends".

So would I have to uninstall ServerPress and do the installation fresh in the way video shows it in the Wordpress Track first course? Or I can leave it as it already is?

The "WordPress course basics" by Zac is it outdated? Or I can go ahead and do it. I find his way of presenting the material easy to understand and straightforward.

Can you give me a time period when the "Beginning WordPress" Track would appear because I am doing a project for a client and so the timeline is very crucial for me, as Treehouse is now the medium I have now adopted for my learning.

Can you give me a time period when the "Developing for WordPress" Track would be finished.

My apologies if the questions are a bit on the spot, but I am on a crucial deadline and need to upgrade/sharpen my wordpress skills and I prefer Treehouse because the presenters/teachers know how to present the material and convey it to the audience in an easy to digest manner.

Great questions! Alena would be best to answer, but she's out of the office today. She or I can respond in more detail tomorrow once she's back.

I'd like to publish the new tracks this week. The maintenance that needs to be done for Developing for WordPress is minimal. Or in other words, you'd be able to work through changes between the course material and the current state of the tools with very little trouble.

As of right now, it sounds like you should continue with WordPress Basics, which is current. There may be a few places where it's slightly out of date, but that's natural for all our material based on how quickly all the technology is changing. If anything comes up that gives you trouble you can seek help here in the Forum from other students or from us on staff.

Are there any updates on a new WordPress track progression? I'm wondering if the release of Gutenberg has caused a delay? I'm guessing Treehouse sorta gave up on WP thinking it would fade away. But the more I look into it it seems like a great area to get into for web development since most developers hate it. That leaves an open field of work available it would seem.

Thank you Mr. Ben please remind her not forget please...I just joined this track https://teamtreehouse.com/tracks/learn-wordpress as it seems to align with the courses you suggest in your first post.

Do you have a time frame for this update? I also wanted to complete the front-end and wordpress dev tracks over the next month.

The track has been updated but the second one they are doing some minor work. Alena Holligan can you tell me if I would need to remove the serverpress since I am not seeing the sqlserver on the task manager. Please see thread as I previous asked the questions in detail.

If Serverpress isn't working for you, you could try the MAMP install. If serverpress is working, there is no need to go with something else.

Dear people of Treehouse,

In all honesty: it's a year later and lots of the material in the WordPress tracks&courses are still outdated... I am really surprised in a negative way since this is not the quality I expect from Treehouse. Especially the WordPress Development track has a lot of old content (2014.... come on) and many of your users have made complains about it before but nothing has been done.

Now soon there will be a big update on WordPress with the introduction of the Gutenberg editor, which will open a lot of new possibilities. Also, the combination with React is becoming really popular and should be included in your courses.

WordPress is and will be a super popular and powerful platform, but Treehouse is letting its clients down by only offering such outdated material (and I am not even talking about all the mistakes made by Zac, the teacher of many of the content).

So I would like to ask you one more time: please update the material asap, get rid of all the old, bad stuff, and add new content that is relevant for 2018 and beyond. Thanks in advance!

It appears that Treehouse has discontinued WordPress courses altogether. None of the links posted in the first response work. They all redirect to the Library page.

I love Treehouse and have used it for almost five years. The content is extremely helpful and has allowed me to get a job in tech. I cannot express my gratitude enough. I have also tried other online courses and find myself coming back to Treehouse every time.

With that being said, it's very surprising that Treehouse is not aware of how important WordPress has become. Also, having the support of the WordPress community would be huge! Especially because there isn't really a go to LMS for WordPress at the moment, unfortunately. The good courses are scattered all over the internet and it's been very hard to find one that teaches the ins and outs of WordPress well.

Anyway, I hope they release more courses in the future :)

Santiago, I've read great things about WPShout's Up and Running course. They claim it's an all-in-one and everything you need.

Just came looking for Treehouse Wordpress tutorials. Disappointed to know that its discontinued.

From Serverpress, you should be able to “Stop or restart the web and database services”.
